on every first lady. >> caroline scott harrison was born in 1832 where she met benjamin harrison. she grew into an accomplished artist, interested in women's issues. although the harrison presidency has been rated as fairly unsuccessful by some historians, those who tracked first ladies considered carolina harrison as one of the more underrated to serve in this role. we'll learn why in this segment of "first ladies: influence and image" and here to tell us more about the story of carolina harrison, our two guests who know the office well. edie mayo, thanks for coming back. and bill seale, white house historian, has spent his professional career understanding the history of that building. bill and edie are both members of c-span's academic advisory committee for this series. we're going to start with an illustration tonight. the white house itself is one of the most iconic buildings in the world. i think -- >> certainly, yeah. >> is -- if caroline harrison had had her way, it would like different today. we have her designs for the white house that we'd like to show people at home right now.

miller. >> what a way to start the day. >> michael: harrison kowiak died when he was 19 years old. he was a sophomore on golf and academic scholarships. his golf trophies still decorate his room in florida. he was made to walk through a dark field at night. his pledge brothers jumped out of the shadows beating him. he died of a brain hemorrhage the next day. shortly after her son's death, lianne kowiak thought she found an legal ally. wilson worked with an organization that would deny financial aid to those who endorsed hazing. but now wilson will not return kowiak's phone calls and she did not realize that a powerful lobby group called frat pack was pushing wilson to back off. saying we believe that effort has bee.when fraternity memberst took harrison to the e.r. in 2008, they sold hospital that he injured himself playing football. it was not until harrison's mother he filed a lawsuit in 2009 that the truth came out. no one was arrested. prosecutors found no basis for criminal charge. joining us now from florida is lianne kowiak, harrison's mother. thank you for joining us in this c

white house? hmm. worstr think of it as the white house. the complainer was mrs. harrison. mrs. kerry harrison. she was found in terrible it a lot.and disliked tructurally it was bad and the walls were in bad shape. and actually after the franklin , the roosevelts went out, the trumans went to a beat up house. taken loads of furniture by the roosevelts. their possessions. there were white squares where wallpaper where pictures had been -- you know, 13 years. that was-- that was -- pretty run down. that's not why truman remodelled though.e, no president has time to take off and do the house over. requirement for him. basis security was the of this. with truman. not the fact that it was shabby. all he secret service and of a sudden it's too dangerous. this is the wood primarily inside with the lamp and all that, one fire bomb could ignite it. truman was presented with a report that had been done a week or two after pearl harbor when they begged roosevelt to leave. houses, i ove old will not. it was the safety of the president. nd when it was finished and truman finished his remodelling

harrison who is also receiving this award tonight. karen harrison is a registered nurse and clinic manager at the native american indian center in oakland and a member from a tribe here in california. she started out as a medical assistant in 1985 with the native american health center and went on to get her registered nurse degree so she's been with the health center for 27 years and 21 of those years she has been a registered nurse. [applause] karen has greatly contributed to the native american health center and sharing her knowledge and wisdom with the whole agency and this goes out to the community as well and serves as a chair on the advisory community and board member of the friendship house and coached american indian children in the tribal athletics program and known as the coworkers as the patient whisperer and when there is a patient that is angry or agitated she is always successful in calming them down. she is a mother and her with her family tonight. can all her kids wave? and she is here with her sister and lots of friends and now we're going to see a video about her. >>

. to do that, we are joined by todd harrison of the center for strategic and budgetary assessments here in d.c. mr. harrison, this is a subject that briefly received scrutiny in washington following the fallout on this -- of the scandal involving former general david petraeus last year but it became also as the department of defense eyes additional cut under sequestration. here is a headline from thursday's "wall street journal" -- that article notes, among other things, that there are plans for possibly shrinking the army from .90,000 down to 380,000 are all the ladies cuts coming from the lowering ranks or do there need to be cut at the top as well? guest: the pentagon has not laid out details so it is still to be determined how they actually make the cuts. but it is fair to say the cuts will have to be proportionate. at the senior officer ranks will have to be cut at least in proportion to the junior ranks. arguably, the senior ranks have swollen and a greater pace over the past few years than the general force. and the drawdown, there might need to be some reshuffling and cut dispro
